In a participatory design process with design patrons of the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts, spaces for self-care, retreat, empowerment and networking – so-called »shelter spaces« – were to be designed for the university's new location in Berlin Mitte.

This project is characterized by intensive research and close collaboration with the design patrons. Through interviews and an iterative design process, a concept was created that was precisely tailored to the needs of the students and employees and the space given. For students and teachers alike, studying at the HfS Ernst Busch is associated with great passion, but often also with physical exertion and pressure to perform. Such an intensive course of study, which thrives on making theater art together, exploring boundaries and going beyond them to create something new, must offer a balance.

A balance is usually based on an imbalance that attempts to regain a state of equilibrium. This flow of energy, this movement should be reflected in the concept: An acrobatic silk scarf is designed to allow you to playfully explore your own body through flowing movements and release tension. A foldable seat cushion should make it easier to get into the sling if necessary and then provide firm support and balance when sitting. At the same time, it should be as compact, lightweight and easy to stow away as possible.
The aim is to provide flexible space for relaxation in order to prevent long-term stress with the help of movement and/or rest.
